Volvo’s EM90 Electric Minivan: A Zeekr 009 with Scandinavian Twist

Volvo Teases Its First Electric Minivan, the EM90

The minivan segment is getting its mojo back and the latest automaker to throw its hat into the people-mover ring is Volvo. The Geely-owned brand has released a teaser for the EM90, the firm’s first-ever electric minivan.

A Scandinavian Living Room on Wheels

Volvo describes the EM90 as “designed for you to make the most of the time spent in the car, like a Scandinavian living room on the move.” The teaser video showcases a Scandi living room shot from above, seamlessly transitioning into the interior of the EM90 through the luxury minivan’s large panoramic glass roof.

The video and accompanying still image also reveal a second glass roof above the first row of seats and sliding rear doors with conjoined front and rear door handles. Additionally, the illuminated Volvo script below the rear window and the brand’s signature Thor-hammer taillights are visible.

Premium Features and Styling

While Volvo has not released further details about the EM90, previous reports indicate that it will be based on Zeekr’s 009 minivan, another brand under Geely. The Zeekr 009 boasts a distinctive grille resembling an industrial-grade shredding machine, but it is expected that Volvo will restyle the EM90’s nose and body to align with the brand’s design language. The interior is also likely to be adapted to fit Volvo’s aesthetic ideals, including a portrait-oriented central infotainment screen.

Powerful Performance

The EM90 is expected to closely follow the Zeekr 009’s specifications. The electric 009 features a pair of electric motors, all-wheel drive, and an impressive 536 horsepower (544 PS / 400 kW).

Conclusion

Volvo’s entry into the electric minivan market with the EM90 demonstrates the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility and catering to the evolving needs of families. With its Scandinavian-inspired design, premium features, and powerful performance, the EM90 is poised to make a splash in the minivan segment.
