Volvo New Models

Boosting All-Electric Driving Ranges

  • The marque will boost the all-electric driving ranges of its plug-in hybrid models.
  • One of Volvo’s most compelling new models will be the all-electric ES90 sedan.
  • Some new models will use the brand’s updated SPA3 platform with high-efficiency electric motors.

Volvo isn’t going to become an all-electric marque as quickly as it had once promised, but that doesn’t mean it’s
going to let its fleet age and die off. In fact, the Swedish brand has plans to introduce 10 new and updated
models over the next two years, many of which will be available in the United States.

New All-Electric Models

The first of these new vehicles is the all-electric EX90, which is already being built in the US. It will be
followed by a smaller electric SUV known as the EX60, serving as the successor to the current XC60 and a
luxurious alternative to the Tesla Model Y.

Another new model, the EX40, formerly known as the XC40 Recharge, is also just around the corner. Additionally,
the long-awaited EX30, whose deliveries were delayed until 2025, will be released.

For station wagon enthusiasts, Volvo is preparing the EV60 Cross Country for production. It will be followed
by the brand’s first all-electric saloon, the new ES90 sedan.

Plug-In Hybrid Models with Longer Ranges

While most of these new models are battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), Volvo is also working on releasing
plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with longer ranges. These PHEVs will be based on the same first-generation SPA1
architecture as the XC60 and XC90, but with a range boost. Volvo aims to achieve 93% efficiency with the new
electric motors, compared to the 85% efficiency of its first-gen e-motors and the current 91% efficiency
rating.

These updated PHEV models will also incorporate the more energy-efficient electric motors found in the brand’s
future EVs.

According to Volvo Car USA and Canada president Michael Cottone, these new products “are exactly what luxury car
buyers are looking for now and in the future. We’re just getting warmed up.”
