VW California T7: PHEV Campervan Set for 2024

Volkswagen has confirmed that the next-generation California camper, based on the Multivan, will be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain when it goes on sale next year. The brand’s commercial vehicles arm has released a pair of design sketches ahead of the California’s reveal at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon trade fair on 25 August.

The sketches reveal that the new California will feature a pop-out roof and gazebo, as well as two sliding doors. This is a significant improvement for right-hand drive markets, as the outgoing T6.1 model only opens on the right-hand side, which can be inconvenient for kerb-side drop-offs.

Inside the California Concept, there is a removable tablet that gives passengers access to climate and lighting controls, as well as a ‘camping mode’ that deactivates the exterior lights to avoid disturbing fellow campers when unlocking the van late at night. The interior is expected to be similar to the T6.1, with a kitchen area, dining table, sink, and other amenities.

The new California is anticipated to use the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Multivan. This consists of a 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 114bhp electric motor, providing a combined output of 215bhp. In the Multivan, this powertrain is rated to return 156.9mpg, although real-world figures may vary. The weight of the California, due to its tent and interior modifications, is likely to affect fuel efficiency slightly.

Production of the next-generation California will begin at Volkswagen’s Hanover plant in Germany next year. Prices are expected to start at a significant premium compared to the T6.1 model, which starts at £61,322. Competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo and Ford Transit Nugget are priced from £83,490 and £76,027 respectively.

For those eagerly awaiting an all-electric version of the California, based on the ID Buzz, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra confirmed that it will be available in 2025. Intra stated that the company wants to expand its range of camper models and offer the “California feeling” that people love in their products. This includes digital services for the California community and new services to complement the purchase of a vehicle.

The Volkswagen California has long been a popular choice for camping enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Its compact size, versatile interior, and comfortable amenities make it an ideal vehicle for road trips and outdoor adventures. The addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain will provide eco-conscious campers with a more sustainable option, allowing them to enjoy the great outdoors while minimizing their environmental impact.

The new California’s design updates, such as the pop-out roof and gazebo, will enhance the camping experience by providing additional space and shelter. The inclusion of two sliding doors will also improve convenience and accessibility, especially for those in right-hand drive markets.

With its combination of practicality, comfort, and eco-friendliness, the next-generation Volkswagen California is set to continue the legacy of its predecessors as a top choice for campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re embarking on a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, the California offers the perfect blend of functionality and enjoyment. Stay tuned for more details on its official unveiling at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon trade fair on 25 August.
