VW Delays Next-Gen EV Launches Due to Software Issues

Volkswagen Faces Challenges with Software Development for Upcoming SSP Architecture

Volkswagen’s subsidiary Cariad is encountering difficulties in software development for the upcoming Scalable System Platform (SSP) architecture, leading to potential delays in the launch of future EV models by Volkswagen and other brands.

Postponement of VW ID.4 Successor

Insider sources have revealed that the debut of the VW ID.4 successor has been pushed back to 2029 due to setbacks in software development.

SSP Architecture Delay

The SSP architecture, intended to replace the MEB platform, is facing delays in its development timeline. The initial plan was to introduce it in 2025, but this has been postponed. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer hinted that the first SSP-based model could be the electric successor of the Golf, expected in 2028.

Impact on Product Development

The software challenges with the SSP architecture are hindering progress towards ultra-fast charging times and Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. This delay is affecting the overall product development schedule for Volkswagen.

Postponed Launch Dates

According to reports, the launch of the VW ID.4 successor has been delayed by 15 months, now scheduled for 2029. Another electric SUV by VW, codenamed T-Sport, is also expected to arrive later than initially planned, in 2031.

Future Models Affected

While details about other brands within the VW Group are scarce, derivatives of the SSP architecture are likely to be utilized in future models by Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and VW Commercial vehicles, potentially leading to further launch delays.

MEB Platform Update

To allow for a return on investment in the MEB architecture, the debuts of SSP-based models are being postponed. The MEB platform will receive an update (MEB+) in 2026, extending its lifespan. Future MEB-based models include the ID.2 hatchback and ID.1 entry-level EV.

Production Facility Updates

Volkswagen has decided to update existing plants in Wolfsburg and Zwickau instead of building a new dedicated EV factory. This move aims to accommodate the production of SSP-based models and optimize resources.
