The Future of Volkswagen Trucks in the United States

Volkswagen’s Truck Plans: Alive or Dead?

During the Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Pablo Di Si made a surprising announcement that a VW truck is currently not in the plans for the United States. However, recent reports suggest that this might change in the near future.

A Potential Electric Pickup Based on Scout’s Truck

According to WardsAuto, Volkswagen is exploring the idea of introducing an electric pickup truck based on Scout’s model. While the design would be unique, the truck would share key components such as the chassis and powertrain with Scout’s variant. This strategy is similar to how the GMC Hummer EV Pickup is related to other models in the GM lineup.

Features and Design

The electric truck is still in the early stages of design development and is expected to be a crew cab pickup, similar to its retro-inspired counterpart. Reports suggest that the truck will be larger than competitors like the Rivian R1T and will feature a bold yet functional appearance with classic VW design elements.

Competition and Production

If the plans materialize, Volkswagen’s electric truck would be manufactured in South Carolina alongside the Scout pickup. It would enter a competitive market, facing off against electric trucks like the Ram 1500 REV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.

Potential Audi SUV Collaboration

In addition to the truck plans, there are rumors that Audi could also collaborate with Scout to introduce an SUV model. This move could position Audi to compete with the expanding Mercedes G-Class lineup in the future.
