The Need for Sustainable Fuels in Non-Electrifiable Industries

German car industry leaders successfully negotiated for the continued sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in the EU after 2035, on the condition that these vehicles use only carbon-neutral fuels. However, BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse argues that this requirement alone may not be sufficient.

The Challenge of Accelerating the Availability of E-Fuels

The car industry is evolving rapidly, which poses a challenge for the mass production and affordability of synthetic e-fuels. The EU has set a target for all new cars and vans registered in the market to be zero-emission by 2035, with a 55% reduction in average emissions by 2030. While vans have a slightly more lenient timeline, discussions are ongoing regarding heavy road haulage regulations.

It’s worth noting that the UK has stricter regulations, mandating a percentage of car sales to be zero-emission. This has led to market disruption and distortion, such as car manufacturers selling electric cars at a loss and Suzuki being unable to sell its lightweight superminis.

The Role of E-Fuels in Non-Electrifiable Industries

While the automotive industry is making significant progress towards electrification, other transport sectors, such as aerospace, maritime, off-highway agriculture, and construction, face challenges in adopting battery electrification due to the lifespan and cost of their vehicles. Synthetic fuels, also known as e-fuels, are seen as a viable solution for these industries.

Companies like Zero Petroleum and Highly Innovative Fuels are already producing small quantities of synthetic gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel using CO2 from the air and hydrogen from water. Porsche and Formula 1 have also invested in e-fuels, but these efforts are still in their early stages.

The Importance of Mass Availability of Carbon-Neutral Fuels

While electric vehicles (EVs) are beneficial for most car owners, there is a need for mass availability of carbon-neutral fuels to cater to industries that cannot be electrified. This will enable heavy industries to transition away from fossil fuels and contribute to a more sustainable future.

By supporting the development and accessibility of e-fuels, we not only benefit sports car makers, high-mileage drivers, supercar engines, racers, motorcyclists, and race-track goers but also pave the way for a cleaner and greener transportation industry as a whole.
