Details of the highly anticipated Xiaomi SU7, the first car from consumer-electronics giant Xiaomi, have been revealed through Chinese government filings. This sleek saloon is set to go into production in the first half of 2024, aiming to rival the popular BMW i4.

Production Partnership with BAIC

The Xiaomi SU7 will be manufactured under contract by BAIC, a well-established automotive manufacturer, according to Car News China.

Impressive Specifications

The Xiaomi SU7 boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 4997mm in length, 1963mm in width, and 1440mm in height. With a wheelbase of 3000mm, it weighs up to 2205kg in its heaviest configuration.

Powertrain Options

Two powertrain options will be available for the Xiaomi SU7. The first is a rear-wheel-drive system that delivers 295bhp and a top speed of 210mph. The second option is a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system that offers a remarkable 663bhp and a top speed of 164mph, putting it on par with the Porsche Taycan.

Battery Options

Xiaomi will provide two battery options for the SU7. Entry-level models will feature a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from BYD, while more expensive variants will come with a larger CATL pack. Specific battery capacities and ranges have yet to be confirmed.

Advanced Features

The Xiaomi SU7 offers advanced features such as an active rear wing and lidar technology. Additionally, customers can choose between 19-inch and 20-inch wheels, compatible with 245/45 R19 and 245/40 R20 tires.

Progress and Investment

Xiaomi’s car manufacturing division, Xiaomi Automobile, has made significant progress. CEO Lei Jun announced an investment of over ¥3 billion (£360 million) in 2022, with the research and development department now employing more than 2300 people.

Future Plans

Xiaomi has ambitious plans for its EV lineup. In addition to the SU7, the company is developing up to four models, including an SUV scheduled for launch in 2025. Construction of a factory dedicated to Xiaomi car production began in Beijing in 2022.

Pricing and Market Positioning

While pricing details for the Xiaomi SU7 are yet to be revealed, Chinese media reports suggest it will be positioned in the mid-to-high-end market segment.

With its entry into the EV market, Xiaomi aims to leverage its success as the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer by sales volume. Unlike its rival Huawei, which operates a joint venture with Seres under the name Aito, Xiaomi plans to independently develop and manufacture its own cars.
