Xpeng’s UK Launch of G6 SUV Set for Next Year

Chinese EV Maker Xpeng to Launch in the UK Next Year with G6 SUV

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng has announced plans to launch in the UK by the end of next year. Xpeng is already well-established in several European countries, including Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, and is now looking to expand its presence across Europe in 2024. The company will offer a right-hand-drive version of its newest mid-size SUV, the Xpeng G6, to British consumers.

The Xpeng G6 is built on Xpeng’s new SEPA 2.0 platform, which incorporates advanced technology such as an 800V electrical architecture that enables DC rapid-charging at rates of up to 480kW. The SUV measures 4753mm in length and offers a range of battery options, including a 66kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) pack and an 87.5kWh lithium-ion pack. These provide ranges of 360 and 469 miles respectively on the Chinese CLTC test, which is typically more generous than the WLTP test used in the UK.

While the Xpeng G6 will be available in the UK, the larger Xpeng G9 SUV and P7 saloon, currently sold in left-hand-drive European markets, will not be offered to British customers. Xpeng President Brian Gu explained that the decision to restrict right-hand-drive development to new models was driven by a desire to focus on the latest technology.

In terms of pricing, the Xpeng G6 starts at ¥209,900 (£22,900) for the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version in China. The more powerful dual-motor, four-wheel-drive model is priced from ¥276,900 (£30,200). However, UK prices are expected to be significantly higher due to factors such as import duty, homologation, and logistics.

Xpeng has adopted a traditional sales model of partnering with dealer groups rather than selling directly to customers. It is likely that the same approach will be taken in the UK market. The company is part of a new wave of EV manufacturers in China that follows the Tesla model of building digital-focused EVs with proprietary technology.

In July, Xpeng made headlines when it announced a partnership with Volkswagen Group. The German automaker took a 5% stake in Xpeng for around $700 million (£540 million). As part of the agreement, Xpeng will provide Volkswagen with the older platform used in the G9 SUV, allowing the Volkswagen brand to introduce two larger EVs in China from 2026. This collaboration will help Volkswagen expand its EV lineup in China and enhance its technological capabilities.

Xpeng’s entry into the UK market reflects the growing popularity and demand for electric vehicles. With its advanced technology and competitive pricing, the Xpeng G6 has the potential to attract British consumers who are looking for a mid-size SUV with a long electric range. The right-hand-drive version of the G6 will cater specifically to the UK market, demonstrating Xpeng’s commitment to meeting the needs of different regions.

As Xpeng expands its presence across Europe, it will contribute to the ongoing transition towards sustainable transportation and help reduce carbon emissions. The company’s focus on developing the latest technology and its partnership with Volkswagen further solidify its position as a key player in the global EV market.

In conclusion, Xpeng’s announcement of its entry into the UK market with the launch of the G6 SUV is an exciting development for British consumers. With its advanced features, long electric range, and competitive pricing, the Xpeng G6 has the potential to make a significant impact in the UK’s EV market. As Xpeng continues to expand its presence across Europe, it is poised to contribute to the ongoing shift towards sustainable transportation and shape the future of mobility.
